In Memory of Our Founder October 15, 1930 - April 4, 2011

October 15, 1930 - April 4, 2011
This coming August we will celebrate the 38th Anniversary of Volunteer Express, Inc. We are fortunate that a man of simple raising had the entrepreneur foresight to be a farmer, business man, and great politician as he progressed into his 80 years of life.
Ned McWherter founded Volunteer Express in 1973 with two tractors, five trailers, and three employees in Dresden, TN. It started in the days of regulations by being granted authority by the Public Service Commission to serve Dresden to Memphis and Dresden to Nashville. In the years of deregulation, and under his careful approval, Volunteer Express became one of the first LTL niche carriers in the nation by offering second and third day service to and from the East Coast as well as developing the entire State of Tennessee and surrounding areas into its marketplace.
He served us well as Speaker of the House and Governor of the State of Tennessee but always managed to calendar the Christmas Season to be with his employees during these festivities. There are so many qualities and influences that could be named including the Board of Governors for the U.S. Post Office, as well as being an advisor to former Presidents Carter and Clinton. Ned was also the first recipient of the Tennessee Trucking Associations Pinnacle Award. The Pinnacle Award is the highest award given by the TTA to recognize those who continually served our Trucking Industry faithfully through the years.
Ned always had a tell me about it attitude, and then he would give his approval or disapproval with a simple yes or no before going right on to the next task at hand. He brought his unique character to us in being our Partner, Mentor, and Friend, and this relationship continued through all the years after selling his interest in Volunteer Express. Ned wore our Orange and Gray colors we sent him proudly whether it was a new cap or vest and was proud to be included.
We have been blessed by his life and presence. A memorial contribution was made to the Tennessee Trucking Foundation in memory of Mr. McWherter.
